Adaptive Computing Delivers Moab® for IBM System x


Provo, Utah—September 3, 2009—Adaptive Computing, the company behind the Moab® unified intelligent automation technology, said today it plans to offer Moab Adaptive HPC Suite and Moab Adaptive Computing Suite for IBM System x, BladeCenter® and iDataPlex® server families to create dynamic, intelligent high-performance computing clusters in data centers and cloud environments.

As a fully qualified and supported option for IBM’s System Cluster 1350 solutions, Moab integrates IBM’s Extreme Cloud Administration Toolkit (xCAT) monitoring and provisioning manager with its intelligent policy-based governance capabilities. Together they deliver a unified intelligent operating environment that optimizes infrastructure efficiency and responsiveness to dynamically changing workload and organizational requirements. This reduces costs, improves service levels, and helps manage risk to ensure scalability and resource availability. Customers also benefit as administration of large clusters is simplified.

xCAT has been used to deploy IBM Linux clusters since 1999 and today supports the largest computing installation in the world, the IBM “Roadrunner” system at Los Alamos National Laboratory. xCAT was open sourced by IBM in 2007 and has since grown from its HPC heritage to support all kinds of scale-out solutions. With the advent of cloud computing and the growing size of data centers, xCAT has seen greater adoption over other solutions. xCAT can be a very effective tool to control nearly every aspect of the infrastructure, and when combined with Moab from Adaptive Computing to control job flow, a true cloud-computing environment is possible. With xCAT’s ability to collect power and temperature information, Moab can intelligently schedule workloads to save power. Because xCAT can query the health of the hardware, Moab can query xCAT and place workloads accordingly to improve service availability and performance.
